[WEBINAR] Safeguarding Science: The Role of Integrity Oversight in Scholarly Societies

Join us for an in-depth webinar exploring the intricacies of ethical oversight groups in scholarly society publishing. During this session four societies will compare how their society’s publication ethics bodies are structured and function within the greater organization. Key topics will include the placement and role differentiation of societal ethics bodies, when or how to consult with Editors, the authority these bodies hold within the greater society, and the involvement of publisher partners in adjudication.

Attendees are eligible to receive 1 Certified Association Executive (CAE) and 1 Certified Meeting Professional (CMP) credit.

Learning Objectives

  • Understand the organizational placement of the publication ethics body within a society.
  • Differentiate between the publication ethics body and the member ethics groups within an organization.
  • Identify the benefits and pitfalls of whether Editors or Editors-in-Chief are included in the publication ethics body and explain the rationale behind their inclusion or exclusion.
  • Describe the decision-making authority and autonomy of the publication ethics body.

About the Speakers

Jasper Simons, Chief Publishing Officer, American Psychological Association 

As Chief Publishing Officer at the American Psychological Association (APA), Jasper Simons oversees the premier portfolio of psychology content for researchers, applied psychologists, and clinicians. The program includes 89 journals, professional and academic books, PsycInfo, and APA Style. Simons is responsible for strategy, editorial, production, sales, and marketing. APA is the global leader in Open Science practices, scholarly standards (JARS), and Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion initiatives (EDI). 

 

AASHI CHATURVEDI, SENIOR ETHICS SPECIALIST, American Society for Microbiology

Aashi Chaturvedi is a Senior Ethics Specialist in the Ethics and IDEAA department at the American Society for Microbiology (ASM). A trained molecular and cellular biologist, she joined ASM in 2022, where she assists in resolving publishing ethics matters per ASM’s rigorous standards, policies, and procedures. 

Kelly Cohen, Senior Publisher, Optica

Kelly Cohen is a 32-year veteran of Optica (formerly The Optical Society). As Senior Publisher, she oversees peer review support and editorial development for eight journals and 500 editors worldwide, manages Optica’s Board of Editors and its Editorial Ethics Subcommittee. She was instrumental in launching eight new journals, implementing Optica’s Reviewer Rewards Program, and establishing the Optica Open preprint server.

Elle Thomas, Senior Managing Editor, American Association of Physicists in MEdicine

Elle Thomas is the Senior Managing Editor at the American Association of Physicists in Medicine (AAPM) overseeing the portfolio of research and clinical journals. Working with editorials boards and AAPM’s publishing partner, she directs new initiatives for the Medical Physics Journal and Journal of Applied Clinical Medical Physics while managing peer review operations.
