Meet the Panelists

Tim Gonzalez, MBA, Vice President of Energy Integrity Solutions, Association for Materials Protection and Performance (AMPP), moderator

Tim Gonzalez is the Vice President of Energy Integrity Solutions at AMPP, where he leads initiatives to strengthen relationships with asset owners, government agencies, and industry partners. With previous experience at the American Petroleum Institute and the American Bureau of Shipping, Tim’s expertise spans across materials protection and performance. His work focuses on advancing the energy sector and enhancing the corrosion and coatings industries. Tim holds a Bachelor’s in International Business from the University of Houston and an MBA from Texas A&M University.


Emily Burnett, Associate Director, Global Programs, Society of Women Engineers (SWE)

Since joining SWE in 2019, Emily Burnett has been responsible for implementing SWE’s global business plan and growing member engagement outside of the United States to bring high-quality professional development and opportunities to women in STEM. Emily’s leadership extends to SWE’s extensive pre-college programs, which foster creativity, curiosity, and a passion for STEM by offering girls and young women valuable learning experiences, mentorship, and a supportive community. Emily has a B.A. in Economics and Spanish from the University of Illinois and an M.S. in Public Service Management from DePaul University.


Maisha Fleming Miles, MS, CAE, Director of Governance, American Society for Microbiology (ASM)

Maisha Miles, MS, CAE, is a seasoned publishing and association management professional with over 25 years of experience in the scholarly publishing sector and member associations.  As Director of Governance at the American Society for Microbiology (ASM), Maisha provides strategic leadership for governance and volunteer operations, supports the ASM Board, and guides leadership development initiatives. Previously, Maisha served as a Journal Development Editor at ASM, leading portfolio strategies and editorial board initiatives, and as the Managing Editor of mBio, where she established it as a high-impact journal in microbial sciences. Maisha holds a Master’s degree in Management from the University of Maryland Global Campus and a Bachelor of Arts from Virginia Tech. Certified as an Association Executive (CAE), she is actively engaged in professional and volunteer leadership roles, including her work within Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. Her professional affiliations include the Council of Engineering and Scientific Society Executives and the American Society for Association Executives.

 

Barry Schieferstein, CAE, CMP, DES, Chief Operating Officer, The American Society for Nondestructive Testing (ASNT)

Barry Schieferstein joined ASNT in 2018. Over six years as Director of Events, he played a key role in planning and executing significant events that boosted the organization’s industry presence. In July 2024, Barry became the Chief Operating Officer (COO) of ASNT. As COO, he oversees and optimizes daily operations and revenue-generating activities, excluding subsidiary companies. Reporting directly to the CEO, Barry provides strategic leadership, streamlines processes, enhances operational efficiencies, drives income growth, and fosters a culture of collaboration and continuous improvement. Before joining ASNT, Barry spent most of his adult life in retail sales management. In 2013, he transitioned to conference planning, discovering a passion for orchestrating large-scale events. His career in conference planning included positions with the Ohio Department of Higher Education and The Ohio State University, providing valuable experience and a solid foundation for his role at ASNT.
