The Daily Exchange: The Modern Amenities We Couldn't Live Without

At ACCESSE26, we introduced The Daily Exchange, an attendee activation intended to spark conversation and help us learn from one another throughout the week.

One question prompted attendees to appreciate something often taken for granted: What's one modern-day amenity you most appreciate?

Here's what attendees said they're most thankful for.

Keeping Cool and Comfortable

  • Air conditioning

  • Heat

  • Hair dryer

  • Blow-dry brush

By far the most common response was air conditioning. Whether working, traveling, attending meetings, or simply enjoying summer weather from a comfortable distance, attendees agreed that climate control is one of modern life's greatest luxuries.

The Infrastructure We Depend On Every Day

  • Plumbing

  • Toilets

  • Running water

  • Public sewage systems

  • Electric lights

  • Light bulbs

  • Ramps

Many responses highlighted amenities that are easy to overlook because they work so reliably. These essential systems quietly support health, safety, accessibility, and quality of life every day.

Staying Connected

  • Internet

  • Cell phones

  • Cell phone cameras

  • Microsoft Teams

  • Free Wi-Fi

  • Venmo

From virtual collaboration to instant communication and digital payments, attendees recognized the tools that help people stay connected personally and professionally, regardless of location.

Making Everyday Tasks Easier

  • Dishwasher

  • Microwave

  • Air fryer

  • Instant Pot

  • GPS

  • Uber

  • Kindle

  • Grammar checkers

  • Filters

These responses reflected appreciation for technologies that save time, simplify routines, and remove friction from everyday life.

Learning, Entertainment, and Well-Being

  • Audiobooks

  • Streaming music

  • Gyms

  • Trains

  • Money

Attendees also highlighted the amenities that help them learn, stay active, relax, and explore the world around them.

Appreciating the Everyday

One of the most interesting takeaways from this Daily Exchange prompt was how often attendees pointed to things they rarely stop to think about. From running water and air conditioning to GPS and video conferencing, many of today's conveniences have become so integrated into daily life that we only notice them when they're unavailable.

Thank you to everyone who shared a response. Together, you've created a reminder that innovation is not only found in major scientific breakthroughs. It's also found in the technologies, systems, and services that quietly improve our lives every day.

Sometimes, the things we appreciate most are the ones we use without a second thought.

What's one modern-day amenity you most appreciate?
