Implicit bias is something everyone experiences. It is a normal part of our brain's ability to categorize for quick decision making. But it can lead us to making mistakes when we start categorizing people. In this session, we will talk about where implicit bias comes from and why it happens. We will cover related terminology and address the implications of bias in the workplace. We will participate in a self-assessment of our personal inputs in our life- not to share, but to learn from individually. We will talk about ways to be more intentionally inclusive in our thoughts and actions. Finally, we will share case studies of how other organizations have incorporated strategies to advance diversity, equity, and inclusion.
1. Participants will learn where implicit bias comes from, and related terminology, including the three kids of microaggressions.
2. Participants will experience a diversity self-assessment related to the input of diverse perspectives in their lives.
3. Participants will learn strategies for improving implicit bias and incorporating more inclusion strategies in their workplace.
4. Participants will hear case studies about how other organizations have implemented strategies around diversity, equity, and inclusion.
About the Speaker:
Debbie Trueblood, MSW, IOM, CAE
Senior Consultant at Association Management Center
Debbie Trueblood, MSW, IOM, CAE is a Senior Consultant with Association Management Center. She has served professional associations for more than 20 years. She has served as Executive Director for six associations over the last 19 years, serving state, national, and international memberships. She has lobbied in all 50 states and Congress. She served as ASAE’s Ethics Committee Chair in 2018 and is currently Vice Chair of Association Forum’s Welcoming Environment Committee. Under her leadership, her former association received four ASAE Power of A awards, including one for a DEI program. Debbie received her former association’s Diversity Icon Award. She is a former 40 Under 40 recipient. She is a regular speaker on a variety of topics, including association 101, governance, association turnaround, ethics, implicit bias, diversifying boards, member engagement, glass ceiling issues, and designing mentoring programs. She consults with associations on governance, strategic planning, DEI, and membership/marketing issues.
