General Session: The Heart of Change Leadership

Wednesday, July 24th; 9:15 am - 10:30 am
The environment for associations is fraught with unpredictability, rapid change, and competition for the loyalty of members. Organizations that are not agile, innovative, and adaptive do not survive. This context and associated demands on associations translate into an increasing need for agile and resilient leaders who can successfully initiate and guide change efforts. Unfortunately, the dynamics of change efforts can derail even accomplished association leaders. Conventional approaches to change management focus on techniques and tactics directed at others, but fail to recognize that one of the most significant aspects of resistance to change has less to do with the envisioned outcomes and more to do with you the change owner. The heart of change leadership is you - your emotions, your thoughts, and your behavior. This session will distinguish between change management and change leadership as well as clarify several of the key abilities of effective change leaders including grit, resilience, optimism, and a growth mindset. You will gain a fresh perspective on the inner game of leading change that you can apply to your life and profession.
