Master Class Leaders:
Peter Baker, Executive Director, Laser Institute of America
Scott Hunt, Executive Director and CEO, The Endocrine Society

Staff Leadership in a professional society at many levels requires a very diverse set of skills, most of which are not taught in business school. A CEO, or any staff Leader, needs to function at a high strategic level with a board and with members. At the same time the leader needs to understand the operating requirements of the staff, its strengths and weaknesses. These two groups each have their cultures, and they may be significantly different, yet the leader has to motivate, cajole, humor, and lead them both. The leader will lead the staff in a more conventional manner, with appropriate reporting relationships and accountability. He or she will lead the members from behind, encouraging desired behavior, discouraging bad choices, yet honoring the office. Finally, and maybe toughest of all, the leader will manage the interface between these disparate groups and cultures so that each one respects, maybe treasures, the other.

This year Peter Baker and Scott Hunt, both former CESSE Presidents and executive directors of their own organizations, are in charge of the Management Institute and will be putting their expertise to work to create a “Master Class on Leadership—Timeless Foundations, Practical Applications, Secrets of Success.“

The business skills of finance, marketing, operations, and organization are critical parts of their jobs—but they won’t be addressed here. Baker and Hunt will debate the softer sides of the leadership challenges: the management of the key people in the different cultures of the organization.

The program will cover principles of leadership that Baker and Hunt consider to be fundamental, as well as practical tips and applications that can serve any leader operating in multiple cultures. A panel of experienced CEOs from organizations of different types and sizes will provide their insight and perspectives as well. There will be plenty of time for questions and answers, and
a workbook of key discussion points will be distributed.

THE PANEL
• Steve Nelson, Executive Vice President, AACC International
• Lynn Strother, Executive Director, Human Factors and Ergonomics Society
• Roque Calvo, Executive Director, The Electrochemical Society, Inc.

Each panelist is a society CEO who has honed and demonstrated their leadership skills, leading to recognition by their peers including being elected as President of CESSE.
