This session has been re-invented in order to allow the CEOs to roll-up their sleeves and get right into the program. “Race for Relevance” represents a revolutionary approach to re-inventing the nonprofit governance while “Governance as Leadership” represents a more evolutionary approach.  We will hear from for experts representing each and have the chance to explore, compare and contrast through moderated dialogue.

Open Innovation: Principles and Application
Open Innovation, Crowdsourcing, and Knowledge Brokering are increasingly being embraced by the for-profit world as well as Foundations as mechanisms to tap into resources beyond the boundaries of their organizations. Scientific and engineering associations comprised of members and volunteers are fundamentally structured as open organizations. But are we leveraging the learning of the for-profit world most effectively? Are there new opportunities that we have not considered? Do we understand the innovation ecosystem in which our members exist as well as we should, even if our association is not ready to implement these concepts? How would we go about applying these concepts if they did seem to make sense? This session will address these questions by providing a primer and then discussing specific application examples in the not-for-profit space.

1:30-3:15 pm
Keynote Session:

Speaker: Dr. Mehran Mehregany
Goodrich Professor of Engineering Innovation, Case Western Reserve University

Speaker: Andreas M. Zynga
Chief Executive Officer, NineSigma, Inc
.

Open innovation has recently emerged from being a promising new industry trend to becoming a standard management discipline across public and private sectors. Recognizing the potential value creation an open innovation approach can yield, not-for-profits can also leverage open innovation to solve immediate challenges, create additional revenue streams, and reduce costs and risk.

Dr. Mehran Mehregany will begin the presentation with a brief overview of open innovation and how it has evolved from being an optional business strategy to a core management discipline. Andy Zynga will share current trends, emerging obstacles and opportunities as well as the tools and processes needed to launch, sustain and profit through open innovation. The presentation will conclude with case studies of not-for-profits embracing open innovation by tapping into resources beyond the boundaries of their organizations.

Did you know that the percentage of CEOs hired from “inside” spiked during the recent economic downturn?  Where are CEOs being hired from? How long is it taking to do a successful CEO search in the current marketplace?  And how long are CEO's staying in their job before moving on?  Hear interesting data about the CEO world from the group that collects it on a daily basis!  Mark Graham of CEO Update reports the macro and micro trends.

Paul Belford examines the dynamics and forces, both internal and external, impacting and altering the role of the CEO in the management and leadership of today's association as boards seek to meet their responsibility in identifying and attracting executives with the skills and qualities essential to the success of their organizations.

Keynote: Work-Life Balance for CSE’s
Speaker: Nancy Quinn Rummel, CAE, ACC, Quinn Executive Coaching

The CEO job is defined by the management of multiple internal cultures including staff, boards (Society and Foundation), membership, chapters, allied organizations, vendors, etc...all of which require personal attention, vision, leadership and high emotional energy.  The number one complaint of CEOs today is: “It’s not fun anymore” due to increasing numbers of tough decisions, the diversity of those decisions, growing importance of change management, and conflicting priorities.

What is the emotional intelligence required to stay balanced and get all the work done?  Why is emotional intelligence more important than cognitive ability in leadership?  What are key emotional intelligence competencies that contribute to CEO success?

In this session, a professional executive coach and former CEO will discuss strategies for staying centered and developing emotional intelligence to increase creativity, decrease reactivity, and avoid burnout.
